Vibol's Story
Life for
nine-year old Vibol used to be hard. He and his family live
in a small one room house made of corrugated iron near Toul
Toum Pong market, one of Phnom Penh's most popular tourist
attractions. He likes his home, but there is no space to
play.
Until two
years ago, Vibol's days where spent wandering about the
streets near his home collecting rubbish to sell for
recycling. He would make about 1000 Riel a day. That is 25
cents, 2 or 3 of which he put in his piggy bank.
Now Vibol,
enjoys the luxury of time and space to play. He has the
chance to be a child again. At the Sunshine Centre, Vibol
says he likes to play and make friends. Vibol did not like
working on the streets because it was boring and lonely.
The Sunshine
Centre provides children like Vibol with the opportunity to
attend Government school in the morning or afternoon. Vibol
goes to school every morning. After school he has a hot meal at the
Sunshine Centre and has the chance to rest and play. In the afternoon he
has time for extra study and to play some more.
