The
Sunshine Centre began in 1999 when Ian and Lorraine
Webber spent some time in Cambodia as short term
associates with Church Missionary Society - Australia. They saw many children
and teenagers working as scrap collectors around the
market and on the streets, living a life of drudgery,
hardship and danger. What started as an attempt to give
these youngsters some relief from the heat and dirt of
their day grew into a Centre offering bathing
facilities, health care, nutritious food and basic
literacy. By mid-2006, the program underwent some
dramatic changes, which included moving to a more
spacious venue away from the market and busy roads and
enrolling the children into public school.
Today,
our program has nearly 90 children, which includes about a dozen
pre-schoolers who stay at the Centre all day. When the
children are not at school, they come to the Centre for
help with homework and revision, English lessons and
Christian education. Besides providing breakfast and
lunch, our Centre is also a safe place for the children
to play and relax.

The Sunshine Centre for Children is a Christian
Care for Cambodia project in Southern Phnom Penh,
serving poor families and promoting appropriate
care for children in the context of families in
the community.
We have seen that just focusing on children's
needs is not enough to guarantee them a better
future, we need to involve their whole family.
We want to see the whole family develop and stay
intact, and so the children go home to their
families every night. Each family is regularly
visited by staff and every two months we invite
all the parents and care-takers to come to the
Centre for a time of fellowship and sharing of
news. We update them on the happenings at the
Centre and also take the opportunity to teach
them different aspects of health, hygiene,
parenting skills, and child protection. The
children also take pride in putting on a short
skit or performing songs. |

supportive
- Enabling families to
nurture and care for each other
